On October 16, 2024, Union of Working Consumers of Greece (EEKE) participated in the online event organized by the Livestock Association of the Attica-Agios Georgios Region, in the context of the International Day of Rural Women (October 15) and the World Food Day (October 16).
Farm managers in the European Union are usually men.
- Just 29% of farms across the EU are managed by women, in Greece, the corresponding figure is 27%.
- In Malta, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands the percentage of women farm managers does not exceed 10%-11%.
- Only in Lithuania and Latvia, almost half of the farms are managed by women.
- Just over two-thirds (68.4 %) of farm managers on the EU’s 9.1 million farms are men.
- Only 4.2% of female farmers are under 35 years of age.
- 42% of women working in agriculture are over 65 years old while the corresponding figure for men is only 29.2%
Supporting propositions of women farmers with:
- Rural development funds for investments in farm equipment and modernizations in order her farm to remain competitive and ensure a good standard of living in the countryside
- Access to training and education and quality broadband
- Strengthening the presence of women in sciences such as agriculture, forestry, Fisheries and Veterinary Medicine
Women can play an essential role as leaders both on farms and in on- and off-farm businesses.
Their presence has not only an economic and social impact but also a cultural one.
Agriculture is the main driving force for the livelihood of any society.
Food is a basic commodity for survival. Access to it is a human right in terms of social cohesion and solidarity.
